All our Chardonnay is sourced from the Sunchase Vineyard located in the Petaluma Gap AVA. The vineyard is perched high above the fog on the Sonoma Coast at an elevation of between 900-1,400', where the Petaluma Wind Gap collides with Sonoma Mountain just over the Napa County border. The cool ocean breezes & moderate sunshine, paired with fractured rocky clay soil consistently produces distinguished Chardonnay. 

Notes from our winemaker, Tom Rinaldi:

This wine is bright, with a slightly golden hue. It has a generous and distinctive nose; pear-like with a touch of stone fruit (apricot), lemon/lime, and mineral.  It has a  rich and crisp palate, rounded edges and is smooth throughout, especially the finish.

Also from the Sunchase vineyard, the difference here is what happens in the winery. After pressing, the wine is racked to 36 month-aged tight grain French Oak barrels for primary fermentation, followed by a very slow secondary Malolactic fermentation with lees stirring in the first six months, giving mouth feel and texture to the wine. This wine represents the finest and purest hand crafted expression of our chardonnay vineyard

Notes from Tom:

This wine has a distinctive golden hue.  It is full on aromatics of honey, caramel, toffee, and applesauce with vanilla.  It has a voluptuously full palate, mature yet zippy.  This wine promises to age nicely for at least a decade.

2012 was a blockbuster near-perfect vintage year, yielding a crop of spectacular fruit that produced a high-structure wine. Summer and fall had warm temperatures, but no notable heat waves, which in turn permitted the grapes to reach a very even ripeness. We picked the Cabernet over three days under truly the most ideal conditions in mid-October. All-in-all, a perfect vintage. When first released, we predicted that the 2012 would turn out to be a new pinnacle for our Estate... and it has. So, we suggest that you pick up some of this outstanding wine and see how well our wines age, in preparation of the fall release of the 2015 vintage. Or, you could hold on to them for a few more years and discover what happens next.

Our Reserve wine is unique every year. We let each season, each barrel, each varietal guide us in crafting this rare blend. Our approach differentiates from what most people expect from a Reserve wine – rather than the best lots of a single varietal or extra care for designated barrels – ours is driven by what nature and vinification techniques result from each year. We exist to make great wine, therefore all of our lots are made with the utmost quality at our disposal – we treat every drop the same. It’s the standout barrels and varietals that rise above all expectations each year, from which we select pay close attention to, when blending the reserve program, only yielding about a single barrel or two. This is Henry’s Reserve – the constant pursuit of the most authentic expression, each year, from what fruit this historic vineyard provides us. It never will be, nor is meant to be, the same.
